Mandala 1999

In 1999 we invited four Tibetan monks from the Gyütö Monastery in India to create a sand mandala inside the synagogue. The Chenrezig mandala, representing the Buddha of compassion, was created over 5 days using coloured sand. In the final ceremony, the mandala was dismantled and poured into the Danube river in the hope that its beneficial energy would be carried on wherever the water flowed.
The video on the right also shows the monks performing throat singing, a tradition of the monks from this monastery.
